 Saira Lakhani Touch Massage Bar

We sat down with Saira Lakhani, the founder of Touch Massage Bar to talk about her nightly bedtime rituals.

Double, Queen, or King?

KING.  Once you go king you can never go back.

Why is a good night’s sleep important to you?

A full night's sleep is crucial to your overall health.  I used to think that sleep didn't matter; my university motto was "sleep is for the weak" and this only really works when you're younger.  As I got older, I realized how important sleep was for overall health.  It helps with skin, memory, inflammation, stress, and productivity.

How many hours of sleep do you get a night—or at least dream of getting?

In a perfect world I would love to get at least 8 hours of sleep, but that never happens.  I usually sleep around 6 to 7 hours (on a good night) but lately I have been tracking my sleep through an app on my watch.  My goal is always 1.5 to 2 hours of deep sleep, which is the most important.  Quality over quantity!

Are you a dreamer?

100%, especially when there is a full moon approaching, I find that I have more vivid dreams that I remember.  I love dreaming, daydreaming, all of it!

What’s currently on your bedside table?

I always have a book (currently Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty), a good hand cream, lip mask, some lavender essential oil, and a cup of tea.

Do you partake in any nightly routine before settling into bed?

I like to take an Epsom salt bath almost every night, it helps me wind down from my day.  This was a new part of my evening routine that I started during quarantine and it's the perfect way to give yourself a little "me time".

Tell us about where the magic happens—and by magic, we mean sleep. How do you optimize your sleep environment?

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary.  I created mine with blackout curtains-these are an absolute must for me.  Trust me, it's absolutely worth the investment.  Also, no technology (my phone) before bed has really helped.

If you feel a restless night coming on, is there anything you do to help get you through the night without waking?

If I know I'm going to have a challenging time falling asleep I usually take some magnesium or melatonin and it almost always works.  One thing that has helped tremendously is no caffeine after 3pm.  If I could, I would drink coffee all day!

What kind of pillows do you use to keep your head in the clouds?

I'm a side sleeper, so I find a medium foam pillow works best and a silk pillowcase is a MUST. I find the texture extremely soft and luxurious; not only does it benefit my skin but it also makes my hair feel so soft.  We spend so much of our lives sleeping why not invest in good quality linens that make your bed feel cozier.

Last but not least, what is your number one piece of can’t-sleep-without advice?

Finding your inner peace daily so that you arrive to bed calm is the most important thing. What that takes will be different for everybody.  For myself, I find that meditation, organizing a to-do list for the next day, and booking myself an evening massage relaxes me so I'm ready to get some zzz!
